False prophets

It seems like every-day we are being bombarded by more and more claims of people who are said to be prophets of God (the God of the Bible). How can we tell if these prophets are really from God? Are they just self proclaimed prophets? What are we to look for in determining if God is really speaking through one of his prophets? Once again we need to refer to Gods Holy Word which is the King James Version of the Bible.

Here is a reference to what God has spoken on pertaining to false prophets:

Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

We are admonished to be on guard at all times against false doctrines. We are told to prove all things. We should not receive any teaching of anything spoken by prophets, until we first prove them.

How do we prove all things? Every true believing Christian is in agreement that our standard is the Word of God, the Bible. God left us this Book as a reference a standard, or gauge so we could know whether something is good or evil the truth or a lie, right or wrong.

This is reveled to us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

As with anything else in the Christian walk of life, we need to be on guard against the wolf in sheep's clothing. If a prophet is really sent from God, that person will show forth the fruits of the Holy Spirit in their life.

Listed here is a guide that you need to watch out for when faced by a person who claims that they have a divine revelation directly from God

True prophets Reflect Jesus:

We must exercise Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. A persons actions are easily reveled to show their true form. A true prophet must also walk the walk of a professing Christian. He or she must follow their own teaching and prophesy. Their conversation must reflect the word of God.

A true prophet would never teach against the true Bible, The true Bible is the King James Version from 1611, be very leery of those who do not use this Bible. Also whatever is prophesied will never contradict or go against the Bible in any way.

Do they speak of God, of his love and righteousness? Do they believe that Jesus was manifest in the flesh born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified and rose on the third day and now sits at the right hand of God the Father.

If any of these points listed here are not evident in their life, chances are that they are a self proclaimed prophet and not a prophet from God.

God's Standard, the Bible:

As stated earlier, all Prophesy from God will reflect God's ways and not man's. This means that the words of a prophet will be able to be confirmed by its parallel with the true word of God.

I had a person who told me that the Bible has errors in it and is not 100% correct. He mentioned that he gets his revelation directly from the Holy Spirit quoting the verse from  John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. In other words he gets his direction directly from the Holy Spirit and not from the corrupt Bible.

Although this scripture is true that the Holy Spirit will reveal the truth to us, we need look at the entire steps involved.

Let's follow this through:

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. Here we find that the Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth and righteousness, and the Holy Spirit will show us things which will come in the future.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Here we are told that the weapon that the Holy Spirit uses is the word of God.

The power is the sword of the Spirit which is also the word of God (read above) is revealed in Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

We also read that out of the mouth of God went a sharp two-edged sword. This makes it clear that the word of God is the two-edged sword of his spoken words. It is the force of this power. When God speaks the words are a sword. This sword is the word of God. Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

How can we be sure that the Bible is the word of God?

2 Peter 1:21 For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit reveals the true word of God. The true word of God, is the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. Take notice it says that ALL Scripture is inspired by God, not some or certain parts of it.

Psalms 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. (7)  Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever. Here we are told that God will keep his word pure. The Bible is the word of God; therefore the true Bible is 100% true.

We are told that God can-not tell a lie Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began. This means that if the Bible is the word of God, and God can not lie, then the Bible (King James Version 1611) must be correct unless God can inspire a lie.

Jesus taught that the Scripture is the Word of God. Speaking about the Old Testament, Jesus said in Matthew 22:31 Have you not read what was SPOKEN to you BY GOD. And again, in John 10:34-35, Jesus equates the Old Testament or Scripture with "the Word of God". He says that "the Scripture cannot be broken." Anyone who disobeys God's Word breaks himself, but not God's Word or its integrity.

Let us summarize what we just read:

The Holy Spirit will reveal the word of God to those who seek him by using the inspired word of God which is the Bible.

(18) A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (19) Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (20) Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Pride and Lustful Lifestyles:

Another way to tell if a man or woman is of God is by their lifestyle. A person's life is an open book revealing their true self. There are two extreme in which people can go. One is to have much excess laid up for future use and the second is to be purposely in poverty by not wanting to work for a living.

The first is very easy to spot, fancy houses, cars, expensive cloths and excess living do not follow Gods teaching. Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.

The second is to be in poverty on purpose. It is written that if a man does not work he should not eat. Those who do not work but are able to, are no better then those who have laid up much treasures here on earth. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. (11) For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

1Titus 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

The Ways of the True prophet:

The ways of a true prophet will reflect the fruits of the spirit as stated earlier in this writing. A true Christian will live for God in all things that they do. They will be humble and caring and will be wise as a serpent but harmless as a dove as spoken by Jesus in Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

This means that a true prophet will not physically fight in the flesh but by the word of God which is given by the sword of the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;). We are not to physically fight in this world, but we are to defend the things of God.

The Bible makes it very clear that God only gives a true prophet one kind of prophecy, correct prophecy; 100% of the time. This is because if ones doctrine is off, it will lead to their prophecy being false. Once the prophesy is wrong, they no longer speak for God. This is why we are always to test a prophecy by the prophet’s statements.

There is never a time when one of Gods prophets from the Bible ever told a prophecy which did not become 100% true. Don't be fooled by people who claim that they are sent from God when only a small portion, if any, of their saying come to pass.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Many false prophets will try to gain your confidence with false teaching. Our only guard is to compare their words against the word of God.

The Way of the false prophet:

There are many scriptures referencing false prophets. This only can mean that false prophets will be everywhere we turn. More will appear as we close in on the last days. Here are some of the warnings that are placed in God's word concerning self made prophets.

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. These false prophets will be able to speak great things. Their teaching will appear on the surface to be sound doctrine. But as we prove their teaching, we find out that it does not reconcile with the word of God. Beware!

Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. Here we are told what to do when faced with a person who claims to be sent from God but is not. I'm sure that when the false prophet's prophecies are questioned that the prophet will try to scare you into believing that judgment will come upon you if you do not listen to his words. God says that we should ignore the self proclaimed prophet's words and to not be in fear of their effect on your life.

Jeremiah 28:9 The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.

We are to wait and see if the prophet's words come true or not. If the words become 100% true then it is from God. God does not waste his time on childish tricks. I once attended a prophetic service. During the service the "prophet" mentioned something that was supposed to have happen to someone in the congregation. One of the items was that he saw two nickels, another was that he saw a fish hook in someone's foot. He rattled off about 7 to 8 "visions" that he saw. Of course the people flocked to be the one who met the enlighten prophets vision. After about 10 minuets of no one claiming the vision about the fish hook, a woman finally spoke up. She said that someone she knew about 20 years ago had a fish hook in their leg. The prophet immediately claimed that was close enough for him. The sad thing is that in order to be from God it would need to be 100% correct, not just close"

This is not prophesying. Prophesy works in the opposite direction. For example; This false prophet would have to go into the congregation, pick out someone, and tell them that they had a fish hook in their leg on March 14, 2005 at 3:25pm eastern standard time while fishing on lake Michigan on a bright sunny day and be 100% correct. God has never failed to be 100% accurate in every revelation given to his true prophets.

Ezekiel 33:33 And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.

1Samuel 3:19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. (20) And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

2Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Ezekiel, Samuel and Peter speak of true prophets. The Bible makes it quite clear that a prophet is someone who speaks on Gods behalf to the people and there is no inaccuracy in his words. When the prophets of old got their message from God, it was perfect, free from any error. They spoke confidently knowing that what they said God would bring to pass.

2Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. (2) And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. (3) And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. We are warned that there will be false teachers among us. Here we are told that not only should we beware of false prophets but false teachers as well.

Jeremiah 14:14 Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spoke unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of naught, and the deceit of their heart. The false prophets will use the name of Jesus, but they will not be sent from Jesus. This is not only a false doctrine but its blasphemes as well. You need to weight all spiritual doctrines and teaching with the word of God to determine if it echoes true or not.

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever. Satan will be defeated in the last days. Revelation 20:10 tell us that Satan along with the false prophet will be cast into the lake of fire forever. If you follow the false prophet or are a false prophet yourself then you will also join them in the lake of fire.

Isaiah 30:9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:  (10) Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: In the last days people will seek out these false prophets because their teaching will be a watered down doctrine. They will not preach God's true word and commandments, but will rather teach things which are opposite to the word of God. Things that will satisfy the flesh life, they will worship the creation more then the creator.

What Benefit is the prophetic Movement?

Has any restored prophet brought any divine insight into serious theological issues which have divided the Church?

Has any restored prophet brought unity to the Body of Christ due to their insights?

Has any restored prophet ever foretold anything of great consequence to the Church or community (warning of terrorist bombings, stock market crashes, assassinations, etc.)?

Has any restored prophet been called upon to locate criminals, or locate missing children, or to solve crimes?

God’s word yesterday today and forever:

Ezekiel 22:28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered mortar, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. At all cost you must hold any teaching next to the word of God to see if it is of God or of man.

The Lord God is against anyone who teaches or prophesies in his name that was not sent from God. Just because someone speaks of God or Jesus does not mean that they are sent from them. Beware of these false teachers who twist the word or only speak half truths. Their reward is that eternal lake of fire. Make sure you do not follow these teachers. Here in Ezekiel and Jeremiah we read that God will send judgment upon those who prophesize or teach false doctrine.

Ezekiel 13:6 They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.  (7) Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; albeit I have not spoken? (8) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.  (9) And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

Jeremiah 23:32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD. (33) And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD. (34) And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house. (35) Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbor, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?

Jeremiah 23:28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. (29) Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? (30) Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbor. (31) Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. (32) Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.  To invent such lies, and deceive the people, and turn them away from God; agreeably in the preceding and following verses: this shows that this was not through ignorance and inadvertence. It was a meditated and studied thing by them. They contrived it in their hearts, and they were resolute and bent upon it, and took much delight and pleasure in it. Their hearts were in it, and it was in them to do as they did; and in this way they had been long, but should continue no longer.

Jeremiah 23:16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. (17) They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. We should close our ears to these teachings and turn away. Their visions are from themselves not from God. Vain imaginations from within themselves are of their own thoughts and from their own heart and mind. From such things turn away.

Deuteronomy 13:1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, (2) And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spoke unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;  (3) Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

This passage reveals to us that even if a prophet gives us a sign, which does come to be, we are to still to prove all things and revert back to the Bible to see if their teaching and lifestyle matches the word of God. If a prophet were to seek after any other god then the God of the Bible and Jesus, we are to dismiss his teaching and not entertain his thoughts. When the false prophet reveals himself in Revelation he will show many great signs and wonders. Be not deceived, although this man will show great power even to command fire to fall from heaven. Revelation 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

Mark 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. (23) But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. Again this goes back to Revelation 13:13. God has foretold us that these things would happen, even more so as the last days draw near. We are to be skeptical of all teaching. Teachers will distort the true word of God. This is happening today through the new Bible versions. People are questioning "where is the word of God" they are running to all of the Bible versions looking for a passage in one of the many Bibles today, and are trying to find one that closely matches their feelings and not Gods word.

Here is a promise from God in Deuteronomy 18:20 and Deuteronomy 13:3, anyone who prophesizes falsely using the name of God , but was not spoken to from God, will die. Remember that there is only one God, either you prophesize from him or your prophesy is in vain. If you claim to be a prophet sent from God but are not, your heart has become corrupted. You are teaching a false doctrine and you need to repent of your ways or death awaits you. Do not be lead astray by these false teaching. You must prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Be not deceived by teachers who claim to have an "easier" way to salvation.

Deuteronomy 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

Deuteronomy 13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. (4) Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. (5) And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

Jeremiah 29:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. (9) For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

1 Thessalonians 5:21: "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.''
