The Christian Warrior

What is the path of a Christian warrior? Are we supposed to fight our own battles? Are we to take part in the warfare of men's battles? Here is what Jesus preached while we walked this earth.

First let's define some terms:

Carnally: Carnal pertains to the body, the physical body. Synonym of carnal are temporal, earthly, fleshly, secular and mortal.

Flesh: The word flesh also consists of the physical body. The word flesh and carnal can be, in most cases interchangeable.

Spiritual: The opposite of carnal or flesh. Spiritual is relating to supernatural beings or phenomena. That which is unseen by the normal vision of the eye. That which can be felt but not seen.

The New Testament: With the start of the New Testament, the new covenant was put into affect. We are no longer under the law but are under grace. In the Old Testament carnal warfare was common place. However with the dawn of the new covenant we are instructed much differently.

PART 1:

Carnal  Versus  Fleshly

Part 1 takes a look at what the Bible has to say about being carnal or fleshly minded

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

For to be carnally minded: to give way to the flesh, to act out in a physical matter. To think on, and to cleave to the things of this world.

is death: not only death of the body, but also to be dead spiritually.

but to be spiritually minded: the opposite of carnally minded, to think on the things of the spirit and not dwell on the things of this world. We all need to take care of our earthly needs but the greater weight should be given to our spiritual life and living.

is life and peace: after the body is dead, our spirit will live forever. If we sow in the flesh we will reap to the flesh. If we sow to the spirit we will reap to the spirit.

Galatians 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

The signs of a carnal person is the show of physical traits like the ones mentioned here. There are many more signs of a carnally minded person such as:

Drunkenness, Rebellious, Idolaters, Lust after evil things, Fornication, Adulterers, Covetous, Extortioners, Unrighteous, Abusers of themselves, Unbelieving, Resist the truth, Abominable, Murderers, Whoremongers Sorcerers, Liars, Covetous, Seek familiar spirits and wizards, Lovers of their own selves, Proud, Boasters, Blasphemers, Disobedient to parents, Unholy, Unthankful, Without natural affection, Trucebreakers, Traitors, False accusers, A form of godliness, Corrupt minds, Lovers of pleasures, Despisers of those that are good, Reprobate concerning the faith, High-minded, Filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness.

2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;)

For the weapons: the tools we fight with, both for defense and the offense of ourselves against an attacker or attackers.

of our warfare: our fight, or our war.

are not carnal: not based on the physical aspect of fighting. Once you are spiritually minded you no longer fight in the flesh or physical battles.

but mighty: strong, forceful, great, strength.

through God: God, our creator and keeper. Not a power we posses within our self but the power given to us by God.

to the pulling down: to remove or lay siege to, or the demolition of strong holds.

of strongholds: in this case the vice-like grip of Satan and his angels.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

We, in the physical form are of the carnal mind. The law of God is to be spiritual minded. Once we become followers of Christ (saved) we throw off the old man and become a new creature in Christ. Even though we still are carnal, we start to think of the spiritual matters of life.

1 Corinthians 3:4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

The brethren at Corinth had not reached the state of "spiritual men." They were carnal, undeveloped like babes.

PART 2:

Spiritual

Part 2 takes a look at what the Bible has to say about being spiritually minded

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. Everyone should be subject to the rule's of this world. We are to obey mans rules unless it is opposite to Gods will. God is the ultimate power.

Act 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

For there is no power but of God: all power comes from God. Man does not have power unless it is ordained from God. For instance, the current president would not be in office unless it was permitted before hand by God.

the powers that be are ordained of God. As God is the origin of power, and the supreme Governor of the universe, he delegates authority to whomsoever he will; though in many cases the governor himself may not be of God. God keeps them in check and allows them to use their power within the parameters predefined by God to fulfill his will.

Romans 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, Whoever goes against this earthly power or governor, president, king, queen, prince or any other earthly power.

resisteth the ordinance of God: Is going against the ruling of God himself. For to resist those whom God has setup it to rebel against God who put them there.

it is written in Matthew 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. A warning is given to all of those who fight against the rulers of this world. Those who do so are in danger of hell fire.

Proverbs 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

Supporting scriptures for Romans 13:1-2.
Proverbs 8:16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

What is the armor of God? How does one obtain this protection? Ephesians 6:14-17 gives us a clear picture of just what this armor consists of and how to use it in the time of war.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

For we wrestle: pertaining to the actual physically fighting with our enemies.

not against flesh and blood: We are told plainly here that we are not to fight in the physical or of the flesh and blood. A true born again Christian does not turn to the physical arena for our battles.

but against principalities: but rather we are told to fight against principalities.  Principalities is the state, office, or authority of a prince. The position or responsibilities of a principal or the territory or jurisdiction of a prince. The princess mentioned here are not flesh and blood but are the princess of darkness from the spirit realm.

against powers: the forces of Satan's acts behind the physical world unseen by man.

against the rulers of the darkness of this world: we are given some in- site to the conflicts which happen in the spirit world as mentioned in Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

against spiritual wickedness: Satan's angels who sole purpose is to spread the new age enlightenment theories, evolution, and any other ungodly deeds.

in high places: in the seat of power, the great powers of darkness.

Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

The armor of God is the opposite of the physical armor. The armor of the physical world, (Kevlar vests, helmets, camouflage etc..) are of no use and are not of any value in the fight against the spirit world.

The armor of God consists of the protection needed to withstand the attacks of the spirit world. Ephesians 6:14-18 gives us an inside view of this spiritual warfare.

Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

The loins are your midsection. One of your weapons / defenses is truth. The truth is the word of God. We are told here that we should be well versed in the truth (word of God).

And we should put on the breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate would cover our chest and protect our heart. Another way of stating this is that we are to have a heart of righteousness toward God.

Ephesians 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

We are also to preach the word of God. As stated in 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: We need to be willing to preach the gospel to all people.

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, where with ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

When Satan attacks we need to have the shield of faith on over our whole body in order to stop the spiritual assault of Satan.

When you start to pray against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places as stated above in Ephesians 6:12, Satan will focus his attention against us. Satan knows that there is great power in prayer. He will try to stop you in your tracks.

At this point Spiritual warfare begins. We need the shield of faith because we can not see Satan, however, we can feel his effects and his evil power in our life.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The helmet of salvation is to protect us from the thoughts which Satan will try to plant in our minds. When Satan comes at us with thoughts that are contrary to God's word we are to be armed with the sword of the Spirit.

The sword of the Spirit is the word of God. So when Satan tries to sway us with vain thoughts we are to repel him with the word of God.

The sword of the spirit is the only offensive weapon of the whole arsenal of God. All of the others are used for defense purposes only. We are to wield the word of God as our only weapon.

To get a better understanding of spiritual warfare see below

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

We are to always pray. Prayer needs to be our first defense against the powers of evil and not used as a last resort.

supplication, is to ask humbly and earnestly of God.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 also touches on the armor that is needed when confronting the powers of the spirit world.

So far we have not read anything that would compel us to fight any battles in the physical world. We are to be spiritually minded and not carnally minded.

Matthew 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Here is an interesting statement made by Jesus. It states that we should not resist evil.

Here in Matthew 5:39 and Luke 6:29 we are instructed not to fight in the physical or the flesh life.

The evil of man is inspired by Satan. In order to get to the root cause we are to fight the source of the cause. This is the spiritual warfare stated in the writing above in Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The hatred of mans hearts cannot be fixed by anything in this world. It needs to be Conquered at the root cause which is Satan.

Satan is the driving force behind the state of man today. An old saying goes like this, get the big guy first then everyone else will fall in line.

Luke 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
Romans 12:14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Bless or pray for those who mistreat you. It makes no mention of us physically getting even, or fighting in any way.
Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Dearly beloved, Those who are the children of God.

avenge not yourselves, Do not take up arms to defend yourself in the physical world.

but rather give place unto wrath: to allow wrath (anger, rage) to be placed (done) upon us.

for it is written, The sword of the lord, the word of God.

Vengeance is mine; I will repay, God will judge those who are evil and those who discriminate against or persecute his people.

saith the Lord. God has spoken, so let it be written, so let it be done.

Here are some illustrations of the kind of warfare that is fought in heaven, and in the spirit world:

Luke 4:3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. (4) And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Here in Luke 4:3 we read of an exchange of  words between Satan and the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a battle which was fought between good and evil. There were no attributes of physical fighting shown here, but rather a spiritual battle which is fought without the physical weapons associated with carnal warfare.

Satan said If thou be the Son of God... Then Jesus pulled out his sword which is the word of God (the scripture) and said, It is written...

Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. (6) And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. (7) If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. (8) And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

We see the same thing repeated in Luke 4:5 and Luke 4:9. Jesus combated Satan with the sword of the lord, not with physical force but with the holy word of God.

Luke 4:9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: (10) For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: (11) And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. (12) And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (13) And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

The book of Daniel is a very fascinating book of the old testament. Here in Daniel we find that Daniel was praying to God to make known a dream of the king. David prayed for 3 weeks before hearing from an angel of God. The angel explained why he was so long in coming to Daniel.

Daniel 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. (13) But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

The prince of the kingdom of Persia here is not a human carnal person, but rather a spirit or demon of Satan or even Satan himself. This passage tells us that Satan and his henchman are all around us. They are seeking control of your lives by tempting us with the things of this world. We MUST have on the armor of God at all times in order to repel the darts of Satan's attacks.

The angel, Michael, is one of the powerful angels in charge of the army of God. In Revelation 12:7 we read where Michael is also in charge of other angels. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

In Revelation it tells us that the spirit of devils are controlling the kings and other rules of the world. These rules do not have the armor of God. But rather have rejected the teaching of God. These people are influenced by the rulers of darkness such as the prince of the kingdom of Persia. Revelation 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world

*Note. Some people believe that Michael here is referring to Jesus Christ, However Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. Angels are a creation of God. Michael is also one of the chief princes which means that there are more angels like Michael. There is only one Jesus Christ.

Here again Michael the archangel is confronted by Satan himself. Michael does not threaten Satan by any physical means. But rather rebukes (to criticize sharply or to turn back or keep down) him in the name of the Lord.

Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

We are to cast off the darkness of this world. We are to have the armor of God on us at all times. We should never let our guard down and be caught without the protection of God.

Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. (12) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. (13) Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. (14) But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
