Did Jesus descend into Hell?

It is taught by some Christians that Jesus ascended into Hell after his death on the cross. Did Satan have his way with the Son of God in Hell for three days? After reading the scriptures we find that this view is not Biblical.

Lets examine the scriptures that relate to this topic.

Where is Hell and paradise?

First off we need to understand where paradise is. Jesus himself mentions that after his death that he would be in paradise. Reading in Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

So we know that Jesus went into paradise

In Luke we have a understanding of where Hell and paradise are currently located.  Luke 16:23 And in hell he (the rich man) lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off. This tells us that Hell and paradise are located next to each other. They are separated by a large expanse or gulf of some kind.

However it is not so far apart that one can not see the other side and to recognize someone over there. Therefore Hell (the temporary holding place of the unsaved) and paradise (the temporary holding place for the saved) are “under the Earth” or inside the Earth”

After Jesus died on the cross his spirit went to paradise as mentioned in Luke 23:43. This also can be verified by reading in Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jesus spend three days in the bowls of the Earth as he stated.

Why would Jesus go into Hell anyway?

We read in the book of John that just before Jesus died he said it is finished. This means that Jesus completed that task before him. There was no other tasks or steps to be completed.  He did not say half is done, I now need to go to Hell and be tortured by Satan and his minions to complete the sacrifice.  John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The fact is that Jesus finished his work on the cross. Satan is not the ruler of Hell. Satan will suffer in Hell just like all of the other fallen Angels and the unsaved when his time comes. Satan is not the proprietor of Hell, He has no wish to be there, He will not be torturing anyone there but will be in torment himself.

One more note, If Jesus' suffering in Hell was part of his sacrifice for mankind, I'm sure that Satan is smart enough to make sure that Jesus suffered just under the required amount so then it would not be completed in accordance with the amount of suffering that was required.

Satan had nothing to do with Jesus and his finished work on the cross. Satan did not punish Jesus in Hell, Jesus was not at anytime at the mercy of Satan or any of his fallen angles. We are told that God is the one who laid the punishment on Jesus as stated in  Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
