Is there a real hell?

Hell is a place of fire, torment and suffering:

Hell is without doubt not a pleasant place to be. We find in the scriptures listed below that Hell is a place of everlasting fire. There is no escape from the torment of the flames. It is referred to as a furnace of fire.

Luke 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. Here the rich man  mentions that he is in the flames. Try to imagine that you are standing in flames but unable to die. This would be extremely painful. Now try to imagine standing there for ever.

Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Here hell is referred to as a furnace of fire. A furnace is an enclosed area which is very hot. Once you are there, there is no escape.

Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

Matthew 25:41, Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: According to Matthew 18:18 and Matthew 25:41 Hell is the everlasting or never-ending fire. Hell has no end and lasts forever. It's hard to imagine forever. If there were a bridge connecting the moon and the Earth and a single ant were to carry the entire earth to the moon one small piece at a time. This would only be a very very small amount of time compared to forever.

Matthew 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. This makes it quite clear that there is no break from the torments of hell. There is no vacation of any kind. Even for a second to have relief will not be granted. Here the chaff are referred to as the ones who did not follow after God and his plan for salvation.

Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Committing fornication and running after strange men and women they will suffer the vengeance of eternal fires of hell.

Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Here again everlasting punishment for those who ignore God's commandments and life eternal to those who follow after him.

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. This is referring to the fallen angles. These angels that turned from God to follow Satan will be cast into the lake of fire along with those who will be in hell, as we read in Revelation 20:14 (see below).

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: There can come a time in a persons life when their heart is so darken and full of Satan that God will give them up to strong delusions.  2 Thessalonians 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

The lake of fire:

What is the lake of fire and what is it purpose.

The lake of fire is the final "resting" place of the condemned. We are told that death and Hell are cast into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is forever and ever. There will be no escaping the flames of torment. Anything we face here on earth will seem to be small in comparison to the torment of the eternal flames. You will not be able look forward to peace for even one second of time. Only Jesus can save us from going to this place.

Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.  Here we find that the beast (Satan) and the false prophet are cast alive into the lake of fire. Brimstone is always associated with fire and burning.

  • Genesis 19:24 "...brimstone and fire..."
  • Deuteronomy 29:23 "...brimstone, and salt, and burning,..."
  • Psalms 11:6 "...fire and brimstone,..."
  • Isaiah 34:9 "...brimstone, burning pitch. ..."
  • Ezekiel 38:22 "...fire, and brimstone. ..."
  • Luke 17:29 "...fire and brimstone ..."
  • Revelation 9:17 "...fire and smoke and brimstone. ..."
  • Revelation 9:18 "...fire, smoke, brimstone..."
  • Revelation 14:10 "...fire and brimstone..."
  • Revelation 19:20 "...lake of fire burning with brimstone. ..."
  • Revelation 20:10 "...lake of fire and brimstone,..."
  • Revelation 21:8 "...fire and brimstone..."

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever. Hell is forever

Revelation 20:14-15 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the final location where Hell and death will be cast into at the end of time. If your name is not found in the book of life you will be cast into Hell and the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Here is a partial list of sins that God has ordained, which we will be judged by when we are before the judgment seat of God. We cannot use the argument that we were not told of these things or claim that that is not what we have been taught. Every person has the opportunity to look into God's holy word.

Where is Hell located?

The Bible is clear — Hell is inside the earth! The inside of the earth is known to be very hot

The Birmingham News, April 10, 1987 had an article entitled "Earth's Center Hotter Than Sun's Surface, Scientists Say". The article stated that scientists have recently discovered, "The Earth's inner core has a temperature of over 12,000 degrees Fahrenheit!"

Here are many scriptures stating that to go to hell you must go down or into the depth of. It is also referred to beneath and descending into hell.

Psalms 55:15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

Proverbs 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 9:18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Proverbs 15:24 The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

Isaiah 14:9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

Isaiah 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Ezekiel 31:16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

Ezekiel 31:17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

Ezekiel 32:21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.

Ezekiel 32:27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

Amos 9:2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:

Matthew 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

Ezekiel 26:20 When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

Ezekiel 32:18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.

In Numbers 16, the Bible gives the account of people falling into hell alive!

Numbers 16:31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground cleaved asunder that was under them: (32) And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. (33) They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

What does Jesus say about hell?

Jesus Christ spoke more on hell than any other subject. Just look at how Jesus described hell. Here in the book of Matthew and Mark, Jesus clearly reveals the seriousness of hell. He plainly tells us that we should remove our eyes, cut off our hand or foot if it would prevent us from going to Heaven.

This means that if we have a problem of looking at things which are not edifying to God we are to remove that from before our eyes. If we were a thief, then we are to make sure that we do not put ourself in a position where we would be temped to do those things. The world is full of the lusts of the heart; the media is constantly bombarding us with the sins of this world which we should not be a part of. Jesus is very serious about hell.

Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (30) And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Matthew 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mark 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Would you give your life for the kingdom of heaven? The Bible clearly tells us that we should. Don't fear those who can kill your physical body but fear those who have power over your soul.

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

How long will Hell last?

All who enter hell — abandon all hope!

Hell is without end, once you are there you are there forever. Forever is a very, very long time!

Jesus says in Matthew 25:41: ". . . Depart from me, ye cursed, into EVERLASTING fire, . . ."

Revelation. 14:11: "The smoke of their TORMENT ascendeth up for EVER AND EVER: and they have NO REST DAY NOR NIGHT."

Isaiah 38:18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Who will go to hell?

Those who are unfortunate to end up in hell will be there by their own choice. God gives us the choice to either serve him or to serve Satan. I have heard people claim that if God is a God of love, then why would he put anyone in hell. God does not want anyone to perish as stated in John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. It your choice Joshua 24:15 ..."choose you this day whom ye will serve". Make your choice now before it to late.

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Just because you think you are doing Gods will does not mean that you are. We are unable to determine our own state of righteousness as stated in Proverbs 21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. We need to ask God to show us our hearts and our true state of mind.  Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

What is the Pit?

The pit and hell are the same place. These two locations, hell and the pit are referring to the identical place. These are many places where the pit is referred to as a place to go down into.

Ezekiel 31:16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. When the people already in hell see others in the same state of meanness and contempt; as it is some kind of solace for persons in distress to have partners with them: this is a poetic expression, representing the dead as rejoicing to see others in the same condition with themselves.

Numbers 16:30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

Isaiah 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Numbers 16:33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

Job 33:24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

Job 33:28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

Job 33:30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

Psalms9:15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

Psalms 28:1 A Psalm of David. Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

Psalms 30:3 O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

Psalms 30:9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

Psalms 55:23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Psalms 94:13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

Psalms 143:7 Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

Ezekiel 26:20 When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

What about the bottomless pit?

Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. (2) And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. The pit is located on the earth. The door is shut or sealed that has a key which will unlock the door. When the door was opened smoke like the smoke of a great fire filled the air. The smoke was so thick that you could not see the sun through the thick smoke.

Revelation 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. The pit is guarded by Apollyon, the destroyer; which is either the devil or one of his angels.

Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Here again the pit is described as a place of wickedness. The beast (often referred to as Satan himself) will come out of the pit to make war with the saints. This will take place during the second half of the tribulation which is sometimes called the great tribulation. During this time GOD will allow Satan to have power over the saints.

Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. Again this mentions that the beast (Satan) will rise up out of the pit.

Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

Revelation 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Revelation 20:1 and 20:3 tell us that Satan will be chained in the pit for one thousand years. After the one thousand years he will be released, the final battle will take place then Satan and his angels along with his followers will be cast into the lake of fire forever.

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.
