The Battle of Armageddon
In this document we want to define the time right after the tribulation as related to the Bible. As with the previous studies, we will try to stick to the facts and not deviate from what the Holy Scriptures have to say. This document will not address anything outside of scripture or try to match the current events to a key point in the Bible.
We know that Jesus will return as the angel spoke to his disciples in Act 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
We are also told in
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all
the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the
clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Here just before
His appearing the tribes of the earth will mourn at this sight. For they
know that the true God of Heaven and earth is ready to make His return.
The tribes will mourn because they know in their hearts that there is a God in
Heaven and that they have knowing and openly rebelled against His Word.
Starting in Revelation 19:11:
Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. This white horse is not the same horse that is mentioned in Revelation 6:2. The horse from Revelation 6:2 is the anti-christ who is posing as the Messiah, which is the false Christ. This white horse is none other then Jesus Christ Himself.
We read in Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. Here Jesus has already gathered the tribes of the earth together for his return.
Revelation 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. We read in Revelation 19:11 that Jesus is coming to judge the nations and to make war. The wrath of God is poured out on those who have rejected the Word of God. The time for repentance and mercy are over.
Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. Here Jesus is wearing a vesture or His clothing has been dipped in blood. This is described in more detail in Revelation 14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. We are also told in a confirmation that the rider on the white horse is in fact Jesus Christ and not some other person. This is backed up in John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) The same was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Here we are told that the Word of God was our creator.
We are told numerous places the Jesus is our creator. Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (17) And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (18) And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (19) For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; (20) And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. (4) In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
There are couple of things that precede the actual coming of Jesus. Let's take a quick look at some of these:
1) The Euphrates River must be stoped in order for the kings and their armies to cross the river. Revelation 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. It would seem strange that the armies of the world would be stopped by a river. You must remember that by this time much of the world has been destroyed. The infrastructure that is needed to build boats might not exist. Fuel might be in very short supply. Remember that there was a gas shortage when there was hurricane Katrina. Image when over one third of the earth is destroyed what could happen to the supply of fuel.
2) God gathers the world together in the place called Armageddon. The armies must be gathered together to make war with Israel. We are told that that God is the one who gathers the armies together as stated earlier in Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
We are also told in Revelation 16 that satan is the one who calls them to do battle. Revelation 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. (14) For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. We must take notice that God is the one who is in control at all times. God allows satan to gather the armies of the world together for what satan thinks is his ingenious plan. However, God is already many steps ahead of him.
Jesus is ready to make His appearance. The armies follow Him into battle against the anti-christ and his followers. This is mentioned in Revelation 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. and Revelation 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Jesus will return with great power and glory:
We read of this account in the following scriptures.
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of
man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of
the holy angels.
Luke 21:27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
Mark 13:26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
Matthew 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Mark 14:62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
1Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
Jesus will return with lighting and fire:
66:15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his
chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with
flames of fire.
Matthew 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Psalms 97:3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
Psalms 97:4 His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
The out-come of the battle:
The armies of the anti-christ will be defeated in short order. Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them:... There will be no place to hide from the wrath of the great and mighty God. This is written in Malachi 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
We read of this account in the following versus.
Isaiah 63:3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. (4) For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. (5) And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. (6) And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
God is not going to spare His
wrath upon the un-believer. We are told in
The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath
of God, which is poured out without
mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he
shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the
holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
Here we find that God is not going to "water
down" the punishment to those who refuse to serve and trust Him, but
they are going to receive the full strength of His anger.
Revelation 14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
All the saints will come back with Jesus when He returns to the earth. They will be clothed in fine linen, white and clean, and will follow Jesus riding upon white horses. All will have their new bodies and be like Him (Jesus). 1John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Revelation 19:14 And the armies which were
in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen,
white and clean.
Zechariah 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
1Thessalonians 3:13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
After the battle:
After the brief battle is over the, an Angel calls for the fowls from the midst of Heaven to feed on the spoil which will be great. We read of this account in the following versus.
Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; (18) That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
Here is a summary of the battle:
Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (21) And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (30) And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
